The term “learning disabilities” is used to describe the disabilities and/ or disorders that affect the reception and process of information in general. It has nothing to do with the ability to comprehend or intelligence whatsoever. On the contrary, people with learning disabilities tend to be more intelligent than the average person. It’s just that their brain operates a bit differently, so they need different learning methods and techniques in order to learn.

Types of learning disabilities

Dyslexia

Children with dyslexia have difficulty in writing and reading, as well as difficulty in spelling.

Signs:

  • They have difficulty in reading, even in an advanced age.

  • They cannot distinguish many words that are similar, such as “dog, dig”.

  • they tend to “mirror” the letters: They write “d” instead of “b” and “3” instead of “E”.

Dysgraphia

People with Dysgraphia generally have difficulty in writing.

Signs:

  • Slow writing.

  • They get tired too easily when writing.

  • They cannot apply the right amount of pressure on the pencil/pen.

  • The letters don’t have the same size, even when writing just one word.

  • They cannot align the letters.

Dyscalculia

This term is used to describe the difficulty in understanding and processing math.

Signs:

  • Difficulty in doing math operations, especially subtractions and divisions.

  • Children use their fingers to calculate, even in an advanced age.

  • They cannot memorize numbers, so it is hard to learn the prep.

  • They may also have some coordination problems.

Dyspraxia

The term is used to describe a disorder in which the child presents some problems with hand-eye coordination and movement.

Signs:

  • Children with dyspraxia cannot tie their shoelaces or brush their teeth.

  • They usually eat with using their hands because they find it difficult to use a fork and a knife.

  • They are more immature than the children of their age.

  • They are not very good with sports activities in general.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder)

This term is used to describe a child’s weakness to concentrate on the completion of a task, especially in the classroom. Children with ADHD are often hyperactive and disobedient.

Signs:

  • Children with ADHD cannot sit still for more than a few minutes.

  • They constantly misplace their stuff.

  • They cannot focus on attending a class or doing their homework. Therefore, they need more time to complete a task.

  • They cannot follow orders and instructions.

If your child presents more than 2 symptoms on each category separately, it might be high time you visited a specialist. In Greece, there are special centers knows as KEDDY, where parents can take their children in order to diagnose a learning disability.
